A noisy garage door may not always be cause for alarm, but it can sometimes indicate a problem that needs your immediate attention. And although a professional contractor is the right choice for major problems, you can do a little homework ahead of time. Troubleshooting a loud garage door is easy — if you know what to look for.
Check the Moving Components
Garage doors are composed of many moving parts, some of which are easy to maintain. Other components, however, are strictly hands-off for the do-it-yourselfer.
Start by inspecting the door’s nuts and bolts, as well as other hardware and fasteners. If any have worked themselves loose, this can create vibrations that, upon opening and closing, may be responsible for the racket you’ve noticed. Hand-tighten any that are loose, and see if this solves the problem.
Next, check the rollers to determine whether they need to be replaced. If they are in good shape, you can lubricate them based on your manufacturer’s instructions. If they are worn, it’s time for a repair call. When having the rollers replaced, consider choosing nylon rather than metallic, as they are less noisy and potentially more durable.
Finally, examine the hinges, pulleys and torsion springs. If you determine that one of these components is the cause of the noise, contact a garage door repair company ASAP. These aren’t DIY parts — especially the springs — and unusual noises are a pretty strong indication that you’re about to have a real problem on your hands.
A Word of Caution about DIY Garage Door Maintenance
The moving components of your garage door depend on lubrication to run smoothly, and this is a task that most people can do themselves. Take great care, however, not to oil or otherwise lubricate any parts that are excessively worn. This can cause the component to fail suddenly. This is especially true for the springs, and that is the one part you never want to tinker with yourself. Servicing torsion springs requires specialized tools and training, as they can cause serious harm to people and property if they fail unexpectedly.
